Bolton School has hosted an Explosive Science Day with the aim of inspiring able Year 10 Science pupils from local secondary schools.
The day was led by teaching staff from the School and the University of Manchester. Help was also given by Dr Brian Iddon, Member of Parliament for Bolton South-East, who, having a PhD in Chemistry, enjoyed getting involved in the activities. He said: "Events like this engage young people in science, which is needed to reverse the shortage of scientists and engineers in this country. I was impressed that the pupils turned up to school on a Saturday. It was a thoroughly enjoyable event." Dr Iddon is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry as well as a Parliamentary Adviser to it.
There was an emphasis on interactivity throughout the day as pupils engaged in stimulating demonstrations, activities and debates, which encompassed heart physiology, rocket building, DNA technology, ice cream and bouncing custard!
Dr Fraser Mullins, Head of Biology in the Boys' Division at Bolton School, coordinated the day and commented: "It has been an excellent event, allowing us to offer a unique window into the world of science and to really stretch some able minds."
The event was part of an ongoing initiative between local schools and universities - the Ogden Science Trust Partnership – which seeks to promote science and engineering to young people.
